Aerosmith Dream On

Aerosmith’s first single was Aerosmith Dream On.  It was featured on their 1973 debut album, Aerosmith.  The song has its roots in the blues.

aerosmith dream on

Aerosmith Dream On was their first big hit.  It only reached number 59 when it was originally released as a single.  The re release made it to six in 1976.  It was first played live at a Connecticut inn.  Aerosmith Dream On was re-released many times.

Aerosmith Dream On was named one of the 500 songs that shaped rock.  Rolling Stone had it 172 out of 500 of the top songs ever made.  Two other Aerosmith songs, Sweet Emotion and Walk This Way, are tied for this song in the minds of fans as Aerosmith’s signature song.

Aerosmith Dream On has been sampled for other works.  This is when a portion of a song is used in the new work.  Eminem sampled the song in his 2002 album the Eminem Show.  Aerosmith’s guitaris played the guitar in the sample.  Some less well-known artists sampled or covered Aerosmith Dream On.  Slim Thug is one of them.

There is a myth that the band Led Zeppelin actually wrote the song.  It’s just a hoax.  Buick uses the song in their commercials.  Dream up is the slogan in the commercials.    Movies like Last Action Hero used the song.

Aerosmith Dream On has been featured in a number of video games.  Dead or Alive Ultimate used it.  There is also a video game called Guitar Hero Aerosmith.  The song was performed for the game.  The song could be downloaded as part of Guitar Hero III.   It was a promotion for the new game.

Not only has Aerosmith Dream On been featured in many live concerts, but but it has also been performed with full orchestras.  MTVs 10th anniversary featured one such performance.  The Boston Pops performed it in 2006.  At one point Aerosmith dedicated the song to a fallen Israeli soldier.

One the worlds great bands,Queen.

The Start of Queen Songs

In the dim and distant past, the rock band called Queen rose to fame.

This short article is dedicated to all who played those fantastic Songs by Queen. Freddie Mercury, Brain May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon, which if I remember correctly was the bands line up in 1971.

While a little research revealed they had a grand total of 39 songs on vinyl records. Remember those made of vynil?Black and round with a hole in the middle and when scratch went click. Of course the one that anyone worth their salt knows is Queen Bohemian Rhapsody. Others which stand out are, We Will Rock You, Killer Queen.

The band started out at the end of the 1960's, when Freddie Mercury started to front the band and sang lead vocals. The album which seem to bring Queen recognition, was the album 'Sheer Heart Attack'.

A little history. 1968/9 -1973. Brian May,Tim Staffell joined up with drummer Roger Taylor to form a band called 'Smile' and singed to Mercury Records that year. Tim Staffell was a student at Ealing Art Collage. Tim introduced Farrohk to the band and he became a great fan. Tim left to join another band called Humpy Bong, with Farrohk - later changing his name to Freddie Mercury - joined the band as the vocalist. They changed the name to "Queen". The band did not really settle, until John Deacon joined as bass player in February 1971. There was then a period of time while the band gelled together and not until 1974 that the band hit success. The Queen 2 album witch reach number 5 in the album charts and had the lead single 'Seven Sea's of Rye' reaching number 10 in the UK singles chart.

And then the Big Time.

'Sheer Heart Attack' reach number 2 in the UK and sold well in Europe, going gold in US. Then the forth album 'A Night at The Opera'. Queen songs from the album were of course the now legendary Bohemian Rhapsody and the amazing video which at the time was ground breaking visual effects. The rest as they say, is history.

Freddie Mercury passed away in 1991 and another band member John Deacon retired in 1997.

The big four of thrash metal

With the Thrash metal revival in full swing, lets take alook at Thrash metals ‘big four’ bands that bought the genre to the forefront just the heyday of 80s thrash.

  • Metallica. One of the bands of the first wave of thrash, Metallica released ‘kill ‘em all’ in 1983 followed by ‘ride the lightning’ and a classic of the genre ‘master of puppets’. After the technicality of ‘And justice for all’, Metallica were catapulted into rock stardom with the ‘black’ album, which cause many to level claims of ‘sell out’ at the band. After ‘load’ and ‘re-load’, fighting napster and rehab, Metallica came back out with ‘St Anger’, which the making of was filmed for the movie documentary ‘Some kind of monster’. They released ‘Death Magnetic’, which saw them acknowledge their thrash roots. A step back in the right direction? We’ll see.
  • Slayer. From California, Slayer started out sounding very Judas Priest/ Iron maiden-ish with their first two albums ‘Show no mercy’ and ‘Hell awaits’, then came their classic thrash album ‘reign in blood’ in 1986, bringing in more speed, aggression and balls to the wall brutality. While most metal bands died off in the 90s, Slayer continued doing what they do best -playing Brutallly heavy. Seasons in the abyss, ‘Diabilous in musica’ and ‘Divine intervention’ were all released during this time. Original drummer Dave Lombardo returned after ‘God hates us all’ for ‘Christ illusion’. Rumors are abound of Slayer retiring soon, -lets hope not.
  • Megadeth. After being fired from Metallica, Dave Mustaine put all his anger into Meagdeth. They released the album ‘killing is my business- and business is good’ in 1985, and went from onwards from there with ‘peace sells-but whose buying’, ‘so far,so good so what’ and the classics ‘rust in peace’ and ‘countdown to extinction’. Megadeths one constant has alwasy been Mustaine, with a revolving door policy on the other band members. Mustaine called a close to Megadeth in 2002 after being left with nerve damage in one of his arms. But Mustaine undertook intensive pyshical therapy and re-formed Megadeth in 2004, releasing two albums -the system has failed and untied abominations.
  • Anthrax. Anthrax came to being in 1981 with guitarists Scott Ian and Danny Lilker, releasing ‘fistful of metal’ in 1984, their only record with original vocalist Neil Turbin. Then came singer Joey Belladonna to complete the classic anthrax line up for the next 5 albums, including the albums ‘spreading the disease’ and ‘among the living’ before being replaced with John Bush of Armored Saint. Anthrax were then pushed to the side on their new label until Nuclear Blast picked them up and gave us ‘we have come for you all’ in 2004. Anthrax later re-united with Joey Belladonna before he left again, bringing in unknown Dan Nelson. Can they survive another vocalist change? The new album will let us know.

This thrash nostalgia made you want to don some converse trainers and retro bags again? Look no further.

Thrash metal- Should it have stayed in the 80s?

Trends in music seem to repeat every 2 decades- so were currently in the midsts of an 80s revival -a good thing?

Time seems to blur of memories, and what was once the subject of ridicule seems to become clouded with a fondness that only time can give. Acts from the 80s are beginning to reform and release new albums, proving they can show the youngsters how its done.

Thrash metal was dominant in metal during the 80s -which spawned such classics as Metallica’s ‘Master of puppets’, and Slayer’s ‘Reign in blood’ has come back to life with band such as Evile and Municipal Waste leading the way for the new guard. The ‘old school’ bands such as kreator, Testament and Exodus have also seem to be revived and back from the grave after the death knell the 90s delivered. Iron Maiden returned to top form again, much like their 80s haydays and the Darkness shone the spotlight on glam rock. Anthrax brought back Joey Belladonna, only for him to leave again afew months later, with Anthrax then searching for yet another singer. Megadeth split up due to a injury to Dave Mustaine -only to recover and bring them back with the albums ‘the system has failed’ and ‘united abominations’ and were currently waiting for the next album. Kreator moved away from the thrash sound during the 90s only to come back to it at the beginning of this decade with 2001′s ‘Violent revolution’, and have recently released their latest album ‘Hordes of Chaos’.

So thrash is alive and well, but does that mean all those bands will have to suffer through the metal drought of the 90s and the horrors of ‘indie’ and ‘britpop’ again?

And no-one wants to sit through that again.

After your 80s retro bags and converse trainers to fully get into the swing of the 80s? Go here.

Why I Gave My Guitar Teacher the Sack and Swapped Him For Online Guitar Lessons

When learning the guitar, the best idea is definitely an active idea.  You must continuously stretch and push yourself ahead in your training or you will grow dusty, playing the same songs over and over, and your skill won’t really improve.  You must encourage yourself to constantly learn new tunes, chords, and techniques.

There are many different methods to getting this kind of training – online guitar lessons, books, videos, and private guitar lessons.  Private lessons has traditionally been the go-to method, but recently online guitar lessons have been giving guitar teachers a run for their money.

There are many benefits to having private instruction with a live guitar teacher.  You get a kind of hands-on training that can never really be replaced by guitar lessons online – a teacher can actually position your hands correctly, demonstrate the techniques for you up close, and give you real time feedback while you’re playing.  A guitar teacher can adapt their lessons in real-time to handle your most pressing issues and force the student to do the exercises that they might not want to do.  Last, but not least, a live, one-on-one lesson gives a student the emotional support they need to handle learning such a challenging instrument as the guitar.  Often, all that is necessary is the student see someone playing at  a higher level to inspire them to continue on.

With all of these advantages, its easy to see why one-on-one teaching has been the old stand-by for learning how to play the guitar for so long.  But as technology increases, internet learning gets wider, and as the prevalence of online video spreads wider and wider – online guitar lessons are becoming more and more popular.

Guitar lessons online have many advantages over one-on-one training.  First, there is the range of training.  A good online course for guitar, such as Guitar Alliance Online Guitar Lessons, will have over 1,000 different lessons, covering every aspect of learning the guitar: chord charts, contemporary tablature, techniques, etc.  It would be virtually impossible for a private teacher to cover such a wide breadth of material, even over years and years of lessons.  A private teacher is very good at providing a deep knowledge of a few techniques, but can’t compete when it comes to extent of techniques of online lessons for guitar.

The other way online lessons for guitar are superior to a guitar teacher are in convenience.  Private guitar training are structured around the teacher’s schedule, not the pupil’s.  If the pupil can’t practice because of their schedule or their life gets busy, they’ve just wasted money on another lesson because their teacher is not able to conform to their lifestyle.  A good guitar course online, on the other hand, is always available for lessons around the clock, whenever the student needs it.

But truly the most important reason that online guitar lessons are superior to private teaching is cost.  A good guitar teacher will cost upwards of $50 for a half-hour lesson. That comes to $2600 a year.  A good guitar course online (for example a course like Guitar Alliance Guitar Lessons) costs only $30 year.  With all the cash you save, you could buy a new guitar EVERY YEAR.  This is the true driving reason why more and more people are learning the guitar online – especially in today’s economic situation.

In the final analysis, learning the guitar online is changing into a more prevalent choice.  The breadth of learning that it offers is so much wider than one guitar teacher could ever offer.  Its so much more convenient, being available whenever you want to learn and not only when your teacher is available.  But most of all, the cost: $30 a year versus (the price of a yearly subscription to Guitar Alliance Guitar Lessons) $2600 is a big difference to consider.

How Guitar Video Lessons Can Help

One of the best ways to learn the guitar these days, is with the help of video guitar lessons. As increasing numbers of people are learning the guitar, and they don’t want to pay for expensive private tuition, they are turning to video guitar lessons, as a cheaper, and almost as effective, alternative.

To read a review of a fantastic guitar course that includes loads of great video lessons visit Jamorama Review

What You Can Get From Video Guitar Lessons

If you can find quality videos, you’ll be able to improve much faster than you would just learning from books. While playing at home on your own can be fun, you may not know what the scales, songs or chords you are playing are supposed to sound like or if you’re doing everything correctly. With a guitar video lesson, you’ll see exactly how a professional plays the notes, and if there are any mistakes you might be making.

What Types of Guitar Lesson Videos Are There?

Guitar video lessons are available covering an enormous range of guitar playing topics and skill levels. For beginners, videos showing the correct way to hold the instrument, and basic techniques such as picking and strumming are available.

Intermediate players will probably watch videos dedicated to how chords progress and what notes can be integrated into those scales to start playing songs or improvising music on your own. As well as these, you may also like to look at some videos that show you how to play by ear, or how to write great guitar solos.

More advanced videos are also available, teaching techniques such as fast alternate picking, legato, and sweep picking.

Using Guitar Video Lessons Effectively

In the end, the right guitar video lessons are going to be very effective in providing someone learning guitar with a friendly face and a skilled teacher who can show you how to play a note, chord, or song that might be giving you difficulty. It may not be as nice as having an actual teacher, who can give criticism and advice, but it is still a lot better than just reading from a book, or trying to figure things out on your own.

You need to maintain your practice sessions though. You should practice every day, for at least twenty minutes, watching the videos carefully, and follwing along with they’re instructions. To get the most out of using video guitar lessons, you’ll have to use them the way they’ were intended, and follow exactly what the teacher is showing you. If you can do this though, you can be sure that your guitar playing skills will increase dramatically.
