Marshall, Fender or What?

You have bought yourself an instrument whether it be guitar, bass, keyboard or whatever. You are all hyped up to be a rockstar, now you just need to learn to play a little. Remember that reverb, feedback and distorsions of your sound are not good if you want it to be loud so choose the best amp for your instrument.

Which musical instrument amplifier should you get? Is the fact that the amp comes with great reviews and recommendations or simply the brand name the most important consideration for you? Really you should make your choice based on three main criteria, how you will use it, what power output you want or need and what level are you at.

Firstly, how are you going to use your amp. Supposing you have a guitar amp. Is it for jamming with your mates or on your own at home? If you live in a flat and don’t want to annoy the neighbours, or even if you do to get back at them! Will the sound be lost in the high ceilings of an old chucrch for your rehearsals. For more power you usually need more watts. Five watts on two channels may not be sufficient.

Secondly, is this issue of the power. If your friends’ amps go up to 11, much greater power than yours, you might sound like an echo in the distance compared to them. Could you hack that? Can you live with that small feeling?

Thirdly, you must think about what level of expertise you are at. There is no need to buy a high end Fender Amp if you are a total beginner because you will not get value for money. If you are going to be practicing for 10 hours a day for the rest of time maybe but most people’s interest drops off after the first couple of weeks and practice sessions do not last as long as before.

Other considerations may not weigh as much but they should be thought of. What accessories do you need for your amplifier ? Is your guitar good enough for the amp you are going to buy? Is there a second hand market available when you want to upgrade?

Buying an amp is not just a case of looking at the first one that comes into your head and getting it. You need careful consideration. After all, the musical instrument amplifier you buy should give you years of excellent service.

Ipod Gadgets

I think that all reasonably young persons would very much enjoy owning an ipod and taking it along everywhere, even at work and on vacations. Sometimes, the device will require different connectors or additions if we want it to perform every possible task. Because the ipod was such a success, competitive companies tried to modify their products to imitate it, but few succeeded, since the ipod still reigns over this section of the market.

It’s just like the ipod has been made especially for teens. It’s colorful and bright, small but viewable, and it can be easily remarked anywhere you go. This is probably why millions of parents are buying this as a birthday gift for their growing children. And this is also why children who get it are so excited that they immediately want to take it out for a walk. But if you failed to get the needed accessories, your gift turns into a disaster, this is why we should be aware of their importance before we buy.

You could be going on a trip and take you ipod along. It’s a shame not to have the appropriate set of ipod mini headphones with you, as they will be the only way you can listen to your favorite music while you’re traveling. Also, the small accessories are easy to loose, since they are indeed smaller than the usual sets, therefore you’ll need a special ipod bag to carry along, with proper pockets for all accessories, so that they can stay in there sealed and protected.

The most incredible thing about these fashionable players is the impact they have on people watching you. It’s like you come from another world, and you posses something everyone wants. No one is watching your hair style anymore, nobody cares anymore about the way you look or if you are a bit too skinny. They all just glance in jealousy at the ipod, in such a way that you might even feel embarrassed and move on.

The main conclusion here is that the simple fact that you’ve just bought an ipod doesn’t do the trick. If you want it to be completed, you must equip it with the best accessories on the market, and be careful not to forget about extra batteries.

Bring ya daughter to the Slaughter! The Iron Maiden film premier

Monday 20th April sees the premiere of the Iron Maiden ‘rockumentary’ ‘flight 666′, as filmed by acclaimed Anthropologist Sam Dunn, director of the well received documentary ‘Metal: a head banger’s journey’.  In attendance will be the band members themselves, and a certain special appearance from Iron Maiden’s zombie mascot Eddie.

The film shows the band on the first leg of 2008′s Somewhere back in time tour, where the band flew on their very own plane ‘Ed force one’, to do gigs abroad, which was flown by Maiden frontman and registered pilot Bruce Dickinson. 2008′s tour saw the band go back 20 years, playing material from the classic 1984 Powerslave set, hailed then and now as one of the best tours ever. The tour streched on for 2-3 years throughout the 80s, which came close to driving the band mad. Well worth it though.

The film has taken the prestigous ’24 beats per second award’ for best music documentary at the much respected South by South West festival in Texas. The movie will also be shown in 42 different countries at Odeon cinemas for one night only, giving Maiden fans who couldnt make the premier a chance to see the movie. Anyone unlucky maiden fan who misses this showing will get the chance to buy the Blue Ray and two disc DVD set of the movie on May 25th -only a whole month to wait. Which will seem like a long time for anyone who misses out. The movie’s soundtrack is also being released, with live tracks from the tour dates featured on the movie -which can be brought on CD or vinyl on the same date.

The premier takes place in the UK on Monday 20th April, at the Odeon Kensington cinema at 7pm. Need a venue for your London events or events? Look no further.

The Psychology of Branding in Music

We believe we live in a relatively rational world. However in reality we experience lives through our emotions first which we then post-rationalise to help us make sense of it, giving us the perception that we are in control; that we are deciding on what we see, hear, think and feel.

Music has the ability to bypass our rational defences. Ever found yourself singing or humming a song you really hate, but you just can’t stop? Another example would be think about how different music makes you feel; it’s not that music ‘can’ effect our mood – it ‘does’ effect our mood. Again this is because it connects with us at an emotional level. This together with the physical nature of music – in that it can quite literally connect with the heartbeat of the listener – makes music a quite different channel of communication. The music experience is a very personal one.

It is therefore no surprise to hear that:

“Music is the fastest medium for people to form an association (with)”
David Aakers – Building Strong Brands

How does this information help those who are starting an indie music label, or running an independent music label?

Well, these insights are very important to anyone working with brands and music in the music industry because it highlights the potential potency and power of music to communicate at an ‘unstoppable’ emotional level with your prospective audiences. Music and songs are all the more influential and powerful because it speaks to us in a single voice to all of us and doesn’t need any translation at all.

It is a fact that increasingly our purchasing decisions are based on emotional attributes rather than rational ones and given that the strongest brands have strong emotional bonds with their audiences, it follows that music should be a key ingredient in helping to create and form that bond…and influence those decisions.

From a musical artist or a band’s perspective, this means that your music can grow and develop as a brand. It then follows that you can manage your music as a brand – extrapolating relevant brand theory and practice as and when appropriate to help you add value and sustain yourself over time.

Whilst you might think that the above is common practice in the music business I have come across very few artists, music managers, bands or labels (independent labels or otherwise) who adopt this approach. The music business in general tends to be more executional than strategic.

Understanding brand theory and practice – such as positioning, target audience, brand values and personality, communication – will help you take a more strategic approach to your music business overall but more importantly it will help you create long term value over time.

8 Tips for Learning the Art of Sight-Reading Written Music

Sight-reading music is a common practice among piano players.  This is when you play a piece of music for the first time, even though it may be unfamiliar to you.  Though it is not common to play a song perfectly the first time through, here are 8 tips to make sight-reading music easier for you.

Tip # 1. Key Signature.  Pay close attention to the key signature of the piece you are about to play.  Try to remember the appropriate sharps and flats in that key signature so you will know to play those whenever they occur throughout the song.

Tip # 2. Time Signature.  This is another basic characteristic of every piece of music that you must understand in order to sight-read.  You will need to know what kind of note gets one beat. You will also need to remember how many beats are in each measure.

Tip # 3. Key or Time Signatures Changes.  Check through your music for any changes to the key signature or time signature.  Not knowing about a transition will obviously affect the quality of your play.

Tip # 4. Starting and Ending Notes.  Starting and Ending notes are excellent reference points for your piano play. Make sure you are familiar with them.

Tip # 5. Note the Rhythm.  Check your left hand chords to see what rhythm is used throughout the piece.  As you look through the song, you usually can get an idea of how it will go.  Knowing the rhythm up front makes the whole piece easier to play.

Tip # 6.  Play the Melody First.  Also look through the right hand melody line. Play this through first.  This will help give you an idea of the sound of the song and then you can put it all together and you will be able to identify the unique melodic line.

Tip # 7.  Check for Other Markings.  Look through the entire piece and check for any other markings covered in Music Terminology.  Some examples include the loudness or softness of the piece, the speed of the music, and how long you should actually hold each note that is played.

Tip # 8. Relax and Focus. This last tip is so important. Take a deep breath and relax yourself.  Focus on the music and the beauty therein.  Try to play the song all the way through for your first sight-reading.  This gives you a general idea of what the song will sound like.  Later you can break it down and work on each measure or group of measures as you see fit. Remember. We are playing music for the love of it, not as a chore.

Maybe you are asking yourself why you should learn to sight-read music.  Why not just learn the song a little bit at a time?  Sight-reading forces you to move forward at a faster pace until you finish the song, ultimately helping you learn to play music faster.  This helps you get rid of the bad habits that lead to starts and stops when first playing a new piece of music.  Sight-reading is an important skill to learn if you wish to become a good piano player.
